How to pick the best concert/music photographer

Words by Kelsey Roberts

Are you looking to hire a photographer for your music events and don't know who to pick, here are some tips to help finalise your decision.

First things first. Do they have any music/concert/live event images in their portfolio. Check their website and social media to see what kind of photography your photographer takes. If the answer is yes, move onto the next question.

Do you like their style? Are their final edits jumping out to you? Remember! Every photographer has a different photography and editing style. What one photographer’s work looks like won’t be what the next one will look like.

Next, do you know anyone who has already worked with them? Do they have any reviews? Set up zoom meetings or organise an appointment with your photographer to figure out their vibe. Is it working for you, are they the type of person you want photographing your event. Or find out previous clients and ask them their experiences.

Make sure there is a point of contact. Make sure there’s an email, phone number, or a messaging service they use regularly. Emails may get lost in your photographers inbox, so maybe try messaging them on Instagram, or if they have a chat service on their website. Make sure all arrangements and appointments are in written form. This will protect all parties should any mishaps or misunderstandings should arise.

Make sure you understand exactly what you will be receive from your photographer. Ask them what their turn around time is, how long it will take for you to receive your images. Ask how the editing process works. What kinds of edits and adjustments are going to be made and ask how you will receive the images? Many photographers will use sending services like Wetransfer, which allows you to send your high resolution images without losing quality. Some may use a cloud storage like Google Drive for web and social media images.

Shop around. Don’t jump on the first photographer you see. There may be someone out there more suited to you.

Here’s just some tips on the best way to decide on a photographer.
